About the Exhibit: Birches are a compelling subject. They are a beautifully romantic visual treat whether encountered in a clearing at the edge of dark woods, growing from a lichen and moss covered floor, offset against an old farmer's wall or showing their striking and instantly recognizable black on white bark against a blaze of autumn color. Eight environments are depicted with birches complementing landscapes, birds, animals and plants. A unified and startlingly beautiful collection, sure to delight.
Artist Statement: I paint for the joy of learning and the creative act. I teach to help other people enjoy what I and they can discover. Thank you for your interest in my art. --Bruce Davidson
About the Artist: Bruce Davidson received formal training at the Art Institute of Boston, studying illustration and design, and continued his training at the DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln. He is a self trained watercolorist who has lived in New England all his life but travels often to paint. His watercolor paintings and limited edition prints hang in homes and businesses around the globe. Bruce has developed a very successful methodology and teaching style. In fall and winter he teaches drawing, watercolor and acrylic painting, and leads watercolor expeditions to France. Recent mural commissions include: the Bolton Public Library Children’s Room, a semiconductor firm in Chelmsford, and the Acton TV studio reception area. He recently created and donated four murals:
• For the residents, staff and visitors of the Concord Health Care Center, Concord
• A Tuscan countryside (with 7 young student artists) for residents, staff and visitors of Walden Rehab, Concord
• An undersea world on 4 walls and ceiling for a 6-year-old boy with brain cancer
• A royal court of her dogs for a 6-year-old girl with brain cancer
The subject matter of Bruce's work ranges greatly, from depictions of New England farms and landscapes to a majestic Russian tall ship and an America's Cup yacht powering upwind. It brings you around the globe from the Belizean rain forest to southwest France and then back to Boston with the Custom House Tower dramatically lit at night. His work also includes the beauty of the bygone art of the carved and painted carousel horse, the coiled power of a Red Sox slugger, the face of the beloved Polish Pontiff, and a large blue fish carved from rough sawn lumber from a local mill.
