ARTIST STATEMENT & BIO: HANNAH GOODWIN

"Drawings from the Kitchen" is a collection of artwork spanning
several years, though the core of this exhibit is from a group of works
completed in early 2006. When I was invited to exhibit here, looking
through my work, and thinking about the young people who study
here, I kept coming back to some of these pieces because of
responses my daughter and other children have had when looking at
them. Then I started to notice connections between different pieces that I hadn't before....and the number of pieces that popped that were centered around the kitchen intrigued me, so I decided to let them be together for while at Indian Hill. Despite the title, and some familiar objects, the drawings are all from my imagination. They are about wishes, scarcity and small events of everyday living. They are both about my own experience and what I see looking out at the world. When I am drawing, I am more interested in the essence of things than in their details, and try to let them have their own life and interactions on the paper. These drawings are in charcoal, oil pastel and oil stick, and all are drawn on printmaking paper. I hope there is something in them for the viewer both on a glance as well as with a longer look.

Bio: Hannah Goodwin has a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and a MFA from Massachusetts
College of Art. She was fortunate to be able to spend a semester at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba, while in graduate school. She has exhibited her work in a variety of places from Maine to New Mexico to Cuba. Over the last several years, while still actively making art, Hannah has put more time and attention on being a Mom than on exhibiting, primarily sharing her work through her studio. Her work outside the home and studio is currently at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where she is the Manager of Accessibility, working to create greater accessibility for people with disabilities.
