SPRING 2012 CLASSES

Classes start the week of February 6 unless otherwise noted.

INTRO TO INSTRUMENTS

Instrument Discovery Series Grades 1-4 (with adult)

Monday, 6:30-7:30 pm
7 weeks - Feb 27, Mar 5, 12, 19 and 26, Apr 2 and 9
$150 per semester (one adult, one child), +$25 each additional child
Instructors: IHM Faculty


This popular series offers hands-on experience with several major instrument families: Brass, Winds, Percussion, Piano, Strings, Voice and Guitar. Students will learn about the history of the instrument, listen to recordings, watch student and professional musicians play, and then have ample opportunity to try out the instruments. Parents will receive valuable information about lessons, instrument costs and choosing the right instrument for their child. Students and their families are invited to an Open Rehearsal of the Orchestra of Indian Hill to experience the instruments in action.

BONUS! Participants are entitled to a 10% discount on their first term of private lessons with the instrument of their choice.

PIANO DEPARTMENT

Group Piano Kindergarten thru grade 2 (For new beginners and continuing students: see options below)

$315 per semester
15 weeks starting week of February 6


The group piano curriculum covers basic music skills, keyboard notation and technique, ear training, ensemble playing, composition, and creative keyboard exploration. Piano or five-octave touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice. Students should be prepared to practice at least 20 minutes per day.

GUITAR DEPARTMENT

Beginning Group Guitar for Kids Ages 8 and up

Saturday, 1:30-2:30 pm

Instructor: Eric Baldwin

Class is geared to the complete beginner. Learn simple chord forms and popular melodies. The goal of the class is to get kids playing together and having fun.



STRINGS DEPARTMENT

Group Violin Class Ages 6-8

Instructor: Adele Ohki

Group Violin Class will introduce your child to basic musical concepts, violin posture and bow hold, playing technique, and care of the instrument. Students will enjoy individual attention as well as learning in a supportive, group setting. This class is a fun and entertaining way to introduce your child to the violin.



WINDS & BRASS DEPARTMENT

Beginning Recorder Class for Adults

Tuesday, 11:00 am-12:00 pm
15 weeks starting February 7
$250 per semester

Instructor: Sue Gleason

Begin to play soprano, alto or tenor recorder while learning to read music in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere. No previous musical experience required or expected. Recorder is ideal for first time musicians especially those with limited breath control and finger agility.



Introduction to Flute Grades 4-6

Tuesday, 3:15-4:15 pm
15 weeks starting February 7
$315 per semester

Instructor: Ashley Addington

For beginning students in Grades 4 thru 6. Ideal for students new to flute, or as a supplement to those learning flute in band class. Students will focus on the fundamentals of tone production, breath support, hand position and posture, as well as basic notes and rhythm. A flute in good working condition is required for the class. A book ($15) will be recommended for purchase. The teacher can recommend instrument rental or purchase options.



JAZZ DEPARTMENT

Beginning Jazz Ensemble for Adults

$300 per semester

Instructor: Eric Baldwin

For adult students with little or no experience with jazz. Must have solid instrument skills and good basic reading skills. Learn basic jazz techniques, jazz scales and chord progressions, and ensemble skills.



Jazz Lab 

Thursday, 7:00-8:30 pm
15 weeks starting February 9
$285 per semester

Instructor: Bill Jones

Ideal for beginning jazz players or classical musicians looking to try something new. Learn the essentials of group improvisation in a small combo. Each semester this class will focus on a small number of jazz standards, exploring various improvisational ideas for each. The group will perform several times during the year at Indian Hill and other venues.



VOICE DEPARTMENT

Cabaret, Jazz & Blues Vocal Performance Ages 16 and up

Instructor: Mary Crowe

Cabaret is all about communicating with an audience in an intimate setting. It encompasses many musical genres, from jazz standards and blues to show tunes. In this class we will explore how to get inside a song, make it your own, and communicate it effectively.

IRISH MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Traditional Irish Bodhran Class 

Thursday, 6:30-7:30 pm
9 weeks starting February 9
(Feb 9, Mar 8 & 22, Apr 5 & 12, May 10 & 31, June 14 & 21)
$207 per semester

Instructor: Matt Heaton

One of Ireland's oldest and most traditional musical instruments, the Bodhrán drum is at the core of all Irish music experience. Technique and style, rhythm study, understanding different tune types (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.), group playing and accompaniment are the core of this course.



Traditional Folk/Irish Singing Class for Kids Ages 6-14

Wednesday, 6:00-6:45 pm
13 weeks starting February 8
$140 per semester

Instructor: Liz Simmons

Explore the world of Irish and Folk style singing. This weekly 30 min session will begin with gentle warm-up focusing on breath control and enhancing vocal flexibility. Emphasizes learning age appropriate folk songs through traditional ear training and memorization. Provides a fun and casual environment for younger students to simply enjoy and expand upon their interest in singing.



Traditional Irish Singing Class for Adults

Wednesday, 6:45-7:45 pm
13 weeks starting February 8
$190 per semester

Instructor: Liz Simmons

Explore the world of Irish songs. This weekly 60-minute session will begin with gentle warm-ups that focus on breathing, scales, tone and flexibility. Each student will be invited to share a song on which he or she has been working. Traditional songs and ballads will be taught to increase students' repertoire of traditional material.



Sessions on the Hill (Traditional Irish Music Ensemble) 

Thursday, 8:00-9:00 pm

$135 per semester
$15 per session drop-in fee
(with prior approval of instructor)

10 weeks starting February 9
Instructor: Laurel Martin

Led by Irish traditional fiddler Laurel Martin, the group will develop a repertoire of traditional Irish session tunes. Music is taught "by ear", but written music will be available. Prior experience with Irish music is not necessary; however, an intermediate level of proficiency on your instrument is required. All instruments utilized in traditional Irish music are welcome (violin, flute, concertina, tin whistle, guitar, button accordion, uillean pipes, etc.)
