A collaboration of Indian Hill Music School and Village Theatre Project

Program Coordinator and Vocal Director: Susan Bonito
Director: Christopher Chew
Music Director and Accompanist: Debra LeBrun
Choreographer: Ellen Peterson

Originally presented by presented by Leland Hayward, Richard Halliday and Rodgers and Hammerstein, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, starring Mary Martin, opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City on November 15, 1959, and ran for 1,443 performances. It won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical 1959-60. The film version, released in 1965 and starring Julie Andrews, received five Academy Awards including Best Picture. The most popular movie musical ever made, it has broken records at the box office and with sales of its soundtrack and home video.

Festival Program: Our summerdaymusicaltheater program offers young people a fun and exciting venue in which to develop artistic expression through singing, dancing and acting. More importantly, it is an effective pathway for personal growth and empowerment through the use of the Multiple Intelligences (the 1983 theory of Harvard professor Dr. Howard Gardner which challenged the traditional view of intelligence, and proposed that people exhibit different ways of being “smart” – through words, numbers, pictures, music, relationships, etc.). Our program uses theater activities and skills to educate the whole student. The Intelligences fostered in the study of theater will help develop life skills such as teamwork, self-motivation, time management, effective communication (both listening and articulating), focusing, self-discipline, cooperation, physical dexterity and empathy for others.

Inspired professional artists/educators from Indian Hill Music School and Village Theatre Project offer individualized attention to each student. Through an integrated approach to workshops and rehearsals, students at every level will be able to learn and immediately apply new skills and concepts to the stage. This summer our exciting four-week program will culminate in four fully-staged performances of THE SOUND OF MUSIC by Rodgers and Hammerstein. For memories and lessons that will last a lifetime, treat your child to this fabulous program!
