Our unique two-week program combines traditional study with innovative classes and ensembles. Students enroll in a Core Program that focuses on developing technique and musicianship on their instrument while participating in a variety of enrichment activities. Sing in a chorus, compose your own music, learn to improvise, play with lots of different musicians, try a new instrument! We'll help you design a program that works for you.

Each student will have an informal placement meeting with faculty to determine his/her appropriate core classes and level, to help choose elective courses, and to determine level of literature for ensembles.

ELECTIVE COURSES:
Each student can have one to three electives in their daily schedule. Choose up to six electives from the following list (in order of preference):

African Drumming: A rousing drumming experience featuring native rhythms of Africa, powerful beats and a variety of instruments.

Alexander Technique: Through sensitive hands-on guidance and simple conversation students learn how to make changes in patterns of movement during practice time. They also learn skills to reduce physical, emotional and mental tension and fatigue during practice and performance as well as in everyday life.

Art of Listening: Discover how to listen to classical music and understand what you hear. The class will explore recordings of masterworks from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods while learning to recognize and describe elements of melody, rhythm, harmony, form and style. Students will gain valuable listening skills and have fun listening to some of history's greatest compositions.

Beginning Guitar: Learn the basics of guitar playing - chords, strumming, melodic lines and note reading. Play and sing along with popular songs from folk and rock idioms.

Beginning Harp: Haven’t you always wanted to learn to play the harp?  Melodies, chords and basic skills will be covered.

Beginning Jazz Piano: Can you already read music but would like to learn how to improvise?  Are you a classical musician looking to try something new?  Learn the basics of jazz style including improvisation, song structures, and jazz rhythms, chords and scales. Develop your sense of time and "swing feel" at the piano and learn how to personalize improvisation as a form of "instant composing."

Beginning Piano: In a group setting, students will learn creative keyboard exploration, basic music skills, keyboard notation, ear training, ensemble playing, and composition.

Beginning Violin: Learn to create tones and simple songs on the violin. Students will also learn about the history and evolution of the violin, its musical diversity, and performance opportunities.

Celtic Sessions: Learn to play jigs, reels and ballads with the help of CDs and printed music. Traditional instrumentation is: flute, pennywhistle, violin, harp, acoustic guitar, piano and bodrhan (Irish hand drum).

Chamber Ensemble: Intermediate to advanced students experience classical or jazz ensemble playing with other instruments in combinations of duos, trios and quartets. The focus will be on collaborative playing: how to follow or lead, and how to listen, balance sound and match musical expression.

Composition: This class provides students of any instrument and any level of experience with essential skills to turn their creative instincts into compositions. Students will create original music with the aid of state-of-the-art music software and MIDI technology. By the end of the class, students will be able to produce professional-grade printed sheet music and have the computer play back the music they composed.

Conducting for All: Learn about score reading, conducting patterns, and how to communicate through a conductor’s baton, while conducting a group of your peers.

Dynamite Disney Songs: Share your favorite Disney songs and learn new ones in a playful atmosphere through group and solo singing.

Ear Training: This class focuses on learning melodies by ear and utilizing the aural theory techniques of solfege and recognition of intervals and chord qualities.

Ear Training Level 2: For students who have taken the first level course or have had previous experience in ear training.

Exploring the Symphony: A historical look at the orchestra through the ages. Listen and learn about all the sections of the orchestra, and how the different tone colors of the instruments add to this collaborative ensemble.

Famous Vocal Pieces/Composers Survey: Recordings, videos, singing and discussion expose students to a wide range of solo and choral music from the classical, jazz, opera and ethnic realms.

Festival Chorus: Use the instrument you were born with and discover the joy of singing in community. Open to all students and faculty.

Improvisation: Learn the essential skills of improv, from embellishing a written melody to creating new melodies with familiar scales. We’ll also explore the basics of group improv, active listening, and tips for keeping your place in an improvised piece.

Improvisation Level 2: For students who have taken the first level course or have previous experience in improvisation.

Irish Pennywhistle: Learn the basics of this little Celtic instrument and some of the jigs and reels commonly played in Irish sessions. It helps if you already play a wind instrument, but it’s not absolutely necessary.

Jazz and A Cappella Choir: Sing accompanied and unaccompanied jazz choral arrangements. Learn beat box (vocal percussion) techniques, and fine tune your ear by singing close harmonies.

Jazz Combos: Beginning, intermediate, advanced levels. Explore jazz, blues and funk music in small groups of 4-6 players. All instruments are welcome.

Listening to Jazz: Students will be guided through listening experiences and will learn what to listen for in a jazz performance. Historical information on key jazz figures will be presented.

Piano Masterclass: Students bring solo pieces in progress to play for the class and receive coaching from the instructor on musicality, technique and practice methods.

Private Lessons: Students may take private lessons with the teacher of their choice during the festival for an additional charge: $32 (30 minutes), $46 (45 minutes), $59 (60 minutes). Arrangements can be made during placement meeting.

Rhythm for Instrumentalists: For non-percussion students, this course is designed to hone rhythmic skills, develop an “inner beat,” and explore new rhythmic concepts. It will enhance any student’s rhythmic confidence and sense of listening.

Show Choir: Sing Broadway showstoppers and strut your stuff in this active, movement-based chorus.

Singing in Foreign Languages: Use the universal language of music to explore languages of other cultures. Sing in at least five different languages by the end of the festival.

Vocal Technique/Voice Science: Students learn basic vocal techniques through a variety of vocal exercises and songs in a group setting. Using Estill Voice Print students learn about resonance and pitch by seeing their voice analyzed on a spectrogram in real time. Other principles of voice science are demonstrated through fun hands-on projects.
