BEGINNING INSTRUMENTS

Instrument Discovery Series (Grades 1-4)

Tuition: $75

Would your child like to explore a variety of instruments before taking lessons? This popular series offers students hands-on exploration of a variety of instrument families: Brass, Winds, Voice, Piano, Percussion, Strings and Guitar. Students will have ample opportunity to try out the instruments as well as listen to recordings and watch professional musicians play, and then have ample opportunity to try out the instruments.

BONUS! Participants are entitled to receive 10% off their first term of study of the instrument of their choice.


Beginning Group Guitar for Kids (Ages 8-11)

Beginning Group Guitar for Teens & Adults (Ages 16+)

Guitar classes for acoustic or electric guitar are an excellent way to learn the basics -- chords and notes in open position, a variety of strum patterns, introduction to note reading, and playing together with other musicians. This foundation class prepares students for private lessons or guitar ensembles. No previous musical background required. Students should provide their own acoustic or electric guitar.

An introduction to the Music Tree curriculum series of Frances Clark and Louise Goss. These classes include basic music skills and theory, creative keyboard exploration, ensemble playing and composition. Students should be prepared to practice at least 20 minutes per day. Materials included. Piano or 61-note touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice.

Beginning Group Piano for Children (Grades 2-3)

In this class students will be introduced to the joys of making music on the piano. Creative keyboard exploration will be combined with learning basic musical skills including reading music, ear training, improvisation and ensemble playing. Piano or 61-note, touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice. 5 student maximum.

Beginning Group Piano for Teens (Ages 13-17)

A small group class for teens who have never played piano but would like to learn. Also for those who used to play piano and would like a refresher course that concentrates on the basics. The curriculum moves at a relaxed pace and includes chord studies, creative keyboard exploration, basic music theory and piano technique. Piano or 61-note, touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice. 5 student maximum.

Beginning Group Piano for Adults (Ages 18+)

It's never too late to learn how to play the piano! This class welcomes the complete beginner and folks whose piano skills are a bit rusty. Class covers basic piano skills through creative keyboard exploration, theory, rhythm, ear training and improvisation. Piano or 61-note, touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice. 5 student maximum.

Family Recorder (Ages 6 thru Adult)

Tuition: $130 (1 adult/1 child; plus $10 each additional family member)

Intergenerational recorder class for parents, grandparents or other adult caregivers and one or more children. Learn to make beautiful music together as a family! Class begins with the basics of good tone production and careful fingering while learning to read notes and play with correct rhythm. Students will learn at least 5 notes and be able to play several simple songs and duets.

Introduction to Harp (Ages 7 thru Adult)

Session 2 - 3 Tuesdays - August 10, 17, 24

While playing simple, familiar melodies on the harp, students will learn the basics of correct hand position, bracketing traditions, along with fingering techniques. Harps will be provided. 4 students maximum.

ENSEMBLES

Intermediate Recorder Consort (Intermediate level and up)

Instructor: Sue Gleason

In this ensemble students will learn the techniques of ensemble playing, in duets, trios and larger groups. Students play recorders ranging from sopranino to bass. Pre-requisite: good intonation and reading skills and ability to play the full range of the instrument.

MUSIC THEORY

Anatomy of a Chord (Ages 10 thru Adult)

Tuition: $100
3 Tuesdays - July 6, 13, 20

Instructor: Eric Kamen

Master harmony and tonal chord structure whether you are a singer, pianist, instrumentalist or composer. This course will examine the structure and function of major, minor and dominant seventh chords. Students will learn how to build chord types within the context of a key, and understand tonal relationships within popular, jazz or classical music styles. Students must have basic level of proficiencey and comfort in music notation and with their respective instrument. Course materials will be provided by instructor. Students should bring manuscript paper and pencils.
