BEGINNING INSTRUMENTS



ENSEMBLES

Flute and Harp Ensembles (Ages 8+)

Tuition: $100
4 Tuesdays - July 12, 19, August 9, 16
5:30-6:30 pm
Instructors: Sue Gleason and Nancy Peters

Join the lovely tradition of flute and harp performance. Multiple ages and levels are welcome. One year of study on either instrument is required. Music will be tailored to the needs and abilities of the musicians.



GROUP PIANO

Beginning Group Piano - Grades K-1 (Time to Begin)

Tuition: $96
4 Tuesdays - August 2, 9, 16, 23

Instructor: Cyndi Bliss

Time To Begin, the cornerstone of the Music Tree series, is a unique and highly effective approach to beginning piano instruction. Starting with off-staff notation, it leads the student to reading direction and intervals, and eventually to the discovery of the Grand Staff. In this introductory course, students will learn the basics of rhythm, technic and creative work. Students should be prepared to practice 20 minutes per day. Piano or 61-note, touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice. Materials will be provided.



Beginning Group Piano - Grades 1-2 (Music Tree)

Tuition: $96
4 Tuesdays - August 2, 9, 16, 23
5:30-6:30 pm
Instructor: Cyndi Bliss

An introduction to the Music Tree curriculum series by Frances Clark and Louise Goss. These classes include creative keyboard exploration, basic music skills, theory, ensemble playing and composition. Students should be prepared to practice 20 minutes per day. Piano or 61-note, touch-sensitive keyboard required for home practice. Materials will be provided.

Adult Hand Drumming

Tuition: $148
8 Tuesdays - July 5, 12, 19, 26 August 2, 9, 16, 23

Instructor: Abe Finch

An adult drum circle based on the Hand-Dance method of Glen Velez. The class features drumming using the Middle-Eastern "Tar" combined with stepping and rhythmic vocalizations. This communal style of drumming gets everyone standing and moving to ancient rhythms, and learning to make beautiful sounds on the simplest of all drums. Anyone can join, and no prior drumming or musical experience is necessary.



RECORDER

Beginning Recorder Class for Families (Ages 6+)

Tuition: $120 (1 adult/1 child, plus $20 each additional child)

Instructor: Sue Gleason

Begin to play soprano, alto or tenor recorder while learning to read music in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere. Recorder is ideal for first-time musicians, especially those with limited breath control and finger agility. No previous musical experience required or expected. Students should provide their own instrument. A good basic instrument for everyone is the Yamaha YRS series plastic soprano recorder.

Bring a soprano, alto, tenor or bass recorder. We will begin a brief review of the basics (posture, breathing, fingering, articulation and rhythm. We will then explore some of the easier ensemble repertoire for two to four parts.



TRADITIONAL IRISH AND FOLK MUSIC

Traditional Irish/Folk Singing (Ages high school-adults)

Tuition: $120
6 Wednesdays - July 13, 27, August 3, 10, 17, 24
6:30-7:30 pm
Instructor: Liz Simmons

Explore the world of Irish/Folk singing. This weekly 60-minute session begins with gentle warm-ups that focus on breathing, scales, tone and flexibility. Each student will be invited to share a song on which he or she has been working, and will be taught age-appropriate songs and ballads to increase his/her repertoire of traditional material. Drawing on years of experience teaching children and young adults, Simmons has a fresh, welcoming approach to empower singers of any age. All levels of experience are welcome.

Cabaret, Jazz & Blues Vocal Performance for Adults

Tuition: $207
4 Wednesdays - July 13, 20, 27 August 3

Cabaret is all about communicating with an audience in an intimate setting. It encompasses many musical genres, from jazz standards and blues to show tunes. In this class we will explore how to get inside a song, make it your own, and communicate it effectively. Ever thought of singing at a cabaret open mic? This class will prepare you, and teach you what you need to know about the thriving amateur cabaret scene in Boston and the Metrowest area.
