A ‘Perfect’ Violin Concerto Tops Indian Hill’s Mendelssohn Program

On Saturday night (November 14) at the Littleton High School Performing Arts Center, the Orchestra of Indian Hill, under the direction of conductor Bruce Hangen, presented three works by Felix Mendelssohn – the Violin Concerto with soloist Juliette Kang, a “Trumpet” Overture and the “Scottish” Symphony No. 3 — with the classic-romantic themes, harmonies and dramatic forms that have endeared him to audiences for the better part of 200 years.

Sublime & Prolific: The Brilliance of Bach and Mendelssohn

Indian Hill Faculty members will present Sublime & Prolific: The Brilliance of Bach and Mendelssohn, on Friday, November 6 at 7:00 pm. The concert will feature the talents of Susan Bonito, soprano; Jenny Tang, piano; Alexander Vavilov, viola; Angel Hernandez, violin; and Caroline Reiner-Williams, cello. The players will perform selections from both composers in a variety of instrumental and vocal combinations, including arias and songs from Bach’s Cantata No. 58 and Mendelssohn’s Neue Liebe, Op. 19; Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major for solo violin; and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 66. Indian Hill Orchestra and Jim Walker Take Diverse But Not Divergent Paths

Diverse musical styles, rather than periods, characterized the major portion of Sunday’s (March 28) concert by the Orchestra of Indian Hill at the Littleton High School Performance Center. Works by Stravinsky, Debussy and Carl Nielsen were composed within about 30 years from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Not to slight the orchestra or conductor Bruce Hangen, but what many or most concert-goers came to hear instead was what classical-jazz flute virtuoso Jim Walker can do with his instrument.
